The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine, through its Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research Group, hosted a delegation from the University of Kent as part of ongoing efforts to deepen international research collaboration around a proposed joint study.

The delegation was led by Prof. Anastasios Tsaousis, Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Molecular and Evolutionary Parasitology and Mr. Bismark Sawer. His research focuses on the evolution and biology of key microbial eukaryotes, including Cryptosporidium and Blastocystis, within a One Health framework aligning closely with the partnership’s goal of translating advanced parasitology research into meaningful public health outcomes.

The visit combined high-level strategic discussions with hands-on technical engagement. Key activities included refining the study design, aligning sample collection and processing workflows, and identifying priority research areas to guide the collaboration. These engagements ensured a shared scientific direction and strengthened the foundation for effective project implementation.

As part of the visit, the team also conducted preliminary community engagement activities in rural and peri-urban settings. This approach helped ground the research within local contexts, foster stakeholder involvement, and ensure that the study reflects real-world public health needs.

During the visit, Prof. Anastasios Tsaousis delivered a comprehensive scientific presentation on “Blastocystis And Other Guy Parasites Under One Health”. The presentation demonstrated how integrated surveillance across humans, livestock, water, and soil reveals hidden transmission networks. It also emphasized the importance of combining genomics, microbiome, and metabolomics approaches to better understand parasite behavior and health impacts.

The engagement further strengthened plans for capacity building, skills development, and knowledge exchange between both institutions. It also reinforces KCCR’s commitment to fostering impactful global partnerships that drive innovation and improve health outcomes across communities.
