KCCR SCIENTIST ACHIEVES HIGHEST WHO CERTIFICATION IN MALARIA MICROSCOPY

April 14, 2026

The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine proudly celebrates Geoffrey Foli for successfully completing the WHO AFRO ECAMM 2025 programme an internationally recognised standard for assessing malaria microscopy competence.

Geoffrey earned Level 1 certification, the highest ranking awarded by the World Health Organization, demonstrating exceptional expertise in parasite detection, species identification, and quantification. This achievement places him among a select group of top-tier malaria microscopy experts contributing to improved diagnosis and global malaria elimination efforts.

Accurate laboratory confirmation remains essential at all levels of healthcare, ensuring correct malaria case management and reducing unnecessary use of antimalarial drugs. This aligns with the WHO’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria (2016–2030), which aims to achieve a malaria-free world by 2030.

The WHO AFRO ECAMM programme includes a rigorous five day (35-hour) intensive course, combining theoretical lectures with practical training using WHO standard slides. Participants undergo detailed assessment and are certified across Levels 1–4 based on their competency.

Geoffrey’s accomplishment reflects KCCR’s continued commitment to excellence in diagnostics, capacity building, and strengthening laboratory systems to support malaria control and elimination in Ghana and beyond.

This milestone further reinforces the importance of quality-assured microscopy as the gold standard for malaria diagnosis, ensuring confidence in clinical decision-making and improved patient outcomes.
