The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine marked World Malaria Day 2026 with a seminar held on Wednesday, 29th April 2026, focusing on emerging strategies to combat antimalarial resistance.

The seminar, titled “Staying Ahead of Antimalarial Resistance through Therapeutic Efficacy Studies, Genomic Surveillance, and Triple ACTs R&D,” was delivered by Dr. Oumou Maiga Ascofaré, Group Leader of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research Group (IDERG) at KCCR.

In her presentation, Dr. Maiga Ascofaré highlighted the growing threat of antimalarial drug resistance and the urgent need for coordinated research efforts to sustain malaria control gains. She emphasized the role of therapeutic efficacy studies in monitoring treatment effectiveness, as well as the importance of genomic surveillance in detecting and tracking resistance patterns.

The seminar also explored innovative approaches such as the development of Triple Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs) as a promising strategy to delay resistance and improve treatment outcomes in endemic settings.

Participants engaged in insightful discussions, reflecting strong interest in advancing research-driven solutions to malaria. The session reinforced the importance of integrating surveillance, clinical research, and innovation to stay ahead of evolving malaria parasites.

This seminar underscores KCCR’s continued commitment to advancing cutting-edge research and contributing to global efforts aimed at achieving a malaria-free world.
