Mental Health in Buruli ulcer disease (BUMEN)

There is increasing evidence of the association between Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and mental health. Nevertheless, only a few NTDs have been robustly studied in this regard. Previous studies have assessed mental health in NTDs, such as leprosy, leishmaniasis, and lymphatic filariasis. There is a relative lack of data regarding the impact of mental health burden and Quality of Life (QOL) of persons affected by BUD. We assessed the impact of BUD on the mental health and QoL of BUD patients and caregivers. In this study, we further provide evidence to highlight that people affected by BUD have a significantly reduced QoL. We also show significant mental distress in BUD is associated with physical and functional limitation in patients and bears a psychological impact on caregivers as well. We highlight the need for community education and integration of psychosocial interventions in BUD management.
