One Health Bacteriology Group Conducts Blood Culture Training for Nurses at Agogo Presbyterian Hospital

September 5, 2024

As part of ongoing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) surveillance efforts, the One Health Bacteriology Group from the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) conducted a specialized training session for nurses at Agogo Presbyterian Hospital on September 4, 2024. The training focused on teaching proper blood sample collection techniques to minimize contamination, a crucial step in improving diagnostic accuracy.

The hospital specifically requested this training to equip its nurses with the skills necessary for collecting uncontaminated blood samples, ensuring the reliability of cultures. Proper sample collection is essential in reducing contamination rates in blood cultures, which directly impacts the fight against AMR and improves patient safety and treatment outcomes.

Dr. Charity Wiafe Akenten, Head of the One Health Bacteriology Group at KCCR, led the session, supported by experienced staff from the research center. The event was held in the lecture room of Agogo Presbyterian Hospital.
