The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine hosted a high-level scientific seminar on Tuesday, 21st April 2026, bringing together leading experts from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) to share insights on advancing global infection research and innovative approaches to malaria studies.

The seminar featured Professor Juergen May, Chair of the Board at BNITM, who delivered a presentation titled “An Update on Global Infection Research at the Bernhard Nocht Institute.” His talk provided a comprehensive overview of BNITM’s research priorities, ongoing projects, and strategic efforts to address emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases worldwide.

Also present was Professor Thomas Otto, Professor of Computational Pathogenomics, who delivered a compelling presentation on “Single-Cell and Spatial Genomics for Malaria Research in Endemic Settings.” His session highlighted the application of advanced genomic technologies in understanding malaria parasite diversity, host pathogen interactions, and dynamic transmission in endemic regions.

The seminar provided a platform for meaningful scientific exchange, with participants engaging in discussions on how cutting-edge genomic tools can enhance malaria research and inform targeted interventions. The presentations also underscored the importance of integrating computational biology with field-based research to address complex global health challenges.

The event further strengthened the longstanding collaboration between KCCR and BNITM, reinforcing shared commitments to research excellence, capacity building, and innovation in tropical medicine.
KCCR continues to position itself as a leading hub for scientific dialogue and collaboration, driving forward impactful research that contributes to improved health outcomes in Ghana and beyond.
