NEW PROJECT TO DEVELOP TARGET PROFILE FOR VIRUSES OF PANDEMIC POTENTIAL IN GHANA

The WaSPP project defined as Waste-Water Surveillance for Pandemic Prevention is a collaboration between KNUST and the Ghana Health Service that aims to develop target profile for viruses with pandemic potential in Ghana.

The Project will leverage on the Ghana’s polio surveillance infrastructure to develop and evaluate methods for detection of multiple high-risk viruses at the intersection between human and animal sewage and wastewater
During a presentation Dr Michael Owusu; the Principal Investigator emphasized the importance of the project in providing actionable data to inform public health decision-making and strengthen early warning systems in Ghana.

In commemoration of the World Hepatitis Day, Dr Michael Owusu highlighted the need for more surveillance on hepatitis E through clinical and wastewater surveillance in order to enhance our understanding of its burden in the Ghanaian communities.

pathogens with pandemic potential, hepatitis E diagnostics, public health interventions, and the future of environmental surveillance in Ghana.
