ONE HEALTH BACTERIOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP AT KCCR CONDUCTS FIVE-DAY PRACTICAL TRAINING IN BACTERIOLOGY AND ONE HEALTH RESEARCH AHEAD OF WAAW 2026

October 29, 2026

The One Health Bacteriology Research Group at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) in collaboration with the University Health Service (KNUST) is conducting a five-day, hands-on training workshop in bacteriology and One Health research for postgraduate students in Kumasi, Ghana, ahead of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2026.

The ongoing training aims to strengthen participants’ practical knowledge and technical skills in microbiology, molecular biology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and One Health research. Through practical laboratory sessions and guided exercises, participants are gaining exposure to essential techniques for investigating bacterial pathogens and understanding antimicrobial resistance.

The workshop covers a range of laboratory procedures and research methods relevant to bacteriology and infectious disease investigations. These include environmental and clinical sample processing, bacterial isolation and identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).

Participants will also receive training in molecular biology techniques, including real-time PCR, as well as data entry, interpretation, and scientific documentation. These practical sessions are designed to help participants develop the competencies needed to generate, analyse, and document reliable laboratory results.

By combining hands-on laboratory experience with research-oriented instruction, the programme provides postgraduate students with opportunities to strengthen their technical abilities and deepen their understanding of bacteriological research.

As preparations continue towards World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2026, the initiative reflects KCCR’s commitment to strengthening laboratory capacity building, supporting postgraduate training, and advancing research on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Through its One Health Bacteriology Research Group, KCCR continues to support the development of scientific expertise and practical research skills needed to address emerging public health challenges
