The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), in collaboration with Vacation Initiatives in Science Africa (VISA), successfully launched Science in Tents 2026, an engaging STEM Fair designed to inspire Junior High School students in Kumasi through practical science and innovation.

The opening day featured a series of interactive, hands-on activities led by scientists, researchers, and STEM professionals, giving students the opportunity to explore scientific concepts beyond the classroom.

The Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research Group (IDERG) at KCCR captivated students with mosquito experiments, demonstrating the biology of mosquitoes and their role in transmitting diseases such as malaria. Participants gained practical insights into vector surveillance and disease prevention.

The AGA Robotics Team, Obuasi, introduced students to the exciting world of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) through interactive demonstrations that showcased how emerging technologies are transforming everyday life and solving real-world challenges.

Students also explored the fascinating principles of light and optics during sessions led by the Photonics and Optics Laboratory (KNUST Photonics Students Chapter). Through engaging experiments, they learned about the applications of physical sciences in modern technology and scientific research.

The Food Safety Hub delivered practical sessions highlighting the importance of food safety, proper food handling practices, and the role of science in preventing foodborne diseases and protecting public health.

As part of the day’s activities, several students were recognized and awarded for their enthusiasm, active participation, and outstanding performance during the interactive sessions. The awards served to encourage curiosity, teamwork, and excellence while motivating the students to continue exploring opportunities in STEM.

The first day of Science in Tents 2026 successfully sparked curiosity, encouraged critical thinking, and inspired students to explore future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The program continues over the coming days with more exciting activities designed to nurture the next generation of scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers.
