TRAINING on MALARIA MICROSCOPY

Microscopy remains the most accessible method for parasite quantitation, classification of severity of malaria disease, for drug efficacy monitoring, and as a gold standard reference of assessing other diagnostic tools.

The mismatch between quality and needs highlight the importance of the establishment of reliable standards and procedures for assessing and assuring quality. Constant training is a key component of quality management program towards establishment of quality assurance and quality control in the laboratory.

As part of its activities, AG May is offering intensive two weeks courses to be held at Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine for KCCR personnel or KCCR Alumni.

The purpose of the training offered is to train microscopists and assess their competency based on WHO and International standards for:

  • Routine testing;
  • Remedial training of microscopists who fail routine evaluation;
  • Training for clinical research and clinical trial purposes

    General information about the training:

    • Duration: 10 days (4 hours per day from 8.30am to 12.30pm)
    • Venue: KCCR Parasitology laboratory
    • Number of participants per session: Three to Five
    • Pre-request: None

      The first in the series will start on the 15th January, 2018.
      Application letter should be sent to Dr Oumou Maiga-Ascofare (maiga@kccr.de) and

      the head of lab at KCCR Dr Tabea Binger (binger@kccr.de) Certificate of completion will be available upon request. Training outline

      Day 1 – The light microscope and preparation of malaria blood films
      Day 2 – Examining blood film for malaria diagnosis – Morphological characteristics of Plasmodium falciparum
      Day 3 – Plasmodium falciparum detection of parasitaemia – How to differentiate artifact from parasite?
      Day 4 – Plasmodium falciparum counting
      Day 5 – Practical
      Day 6 – Morphological characteristics of Plasmodium malariae, ovale and vivax
      Day 7 – Plasmodium species detection (1) – Mono-infection
      Day 8 – Plasmodium species detection (2) – Mixed-infection
      Day 9 – Practical
      Day 10 – Post-test: Theoretical and Practical

Group Leader Global Health and Infectious Diseases

Group Leader Global Health and Infectious Diseases at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (www.kccr-ghana.org).

The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) is a joint venture of the Ghanaian Ministry of Health, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, and Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), Hamburg. KCCR provides a platform for bio-medical research projects jointly conducted by a Ghanaian scientist and an international partner.

In order to promote high-quality research at KCCR, BNITM has launched a programme to establish at KCCR, a Research Group to be led by a Ghanaian scientist in early stage of his/her scientific career. This program aims at advancing the careers of young Ghanaian scientists who plan to return or have returned from training abroad and to support efforts at retaining them in Ghana. The successful candidate should have an excellent track record in Global Health and Infectious Diseases. BNITM and KCCR are equal-opportunity employers.

The Research Group will be equipped with personal emoluments  equalling those of a Department head at KNUST, two PhD students and an appropriate budget for consumables and travel, initially for 3 years with the option of extension.
Applicants should provide a CV with a complete publication list as well as a scientific concept for a Research Group. Please submit an electronic application, preferably by email as one single file of no more than 10 Mb, together with contacts of three references before 22.01.2018 to kolander@bnitm.de, ref. “Group1KCCR“.
