MASTER’S STUDENT – LF-BAC PROJECT

The Management of the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) is seeking for an individual with a driven passion for research and strong determination to fill an MPhil position on the LF-BAC project. The LF-BAC project is a CIFAR-AZRIELI funded project that is investigation the pathogenesis of lymphedema development: the role of the bugs.

QUALIFICATION

The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in any of the life sciences. The candidate must have previous experience in biochemistry, human microbiology, parasitology and immunology. The candidate must have also good laboratory experience in microbiological techniques, molecular testing of microbial agents and general laboratory and field organisation. He/She must be a team player, have good interpersonal working relationship and be able to work under pressure.

The successful applicant should be familiar and prepared to work for longer hours on the field.

GENERAL CONDITION OF THE POSITION

  1. This position is a-two (2) year full time position

  • Work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator
  • Perform all laboratory work associated with the project according to SOPs
  • Assist in field and laboratory work activities.

A Short Course in Basic Epidemiology with STATA for Continuous Professional Development

The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is offering an international four – day, Continuous Professional Development (CPD) – eligible short course in “Basic Epidemiology with STATA”(BASES). The BASES – CPD short course is being run in collaboration with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF). The course is open primarily to medics pursuing a Membership or Fellowship, and individuals who are Masters/Doctoral students/workers in biomedical or public health disciplines. CPD points will be awarded by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.

This BASES short course is aimed at providing up to twenty – five (25) participants with skills in epidemiological thinking, epidemiological study designs, data management and analyses, as well as basic coding using the statistical software package – STATA. The course will be delivered by faculty from Ghana and Germany, and will comprise theoretical lectures with a strong focus on practical exercises, including supervised data analyses of sample “real – world” datasets and the discussion of published studies.

Research Associate at KCCR/KNUST

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and ambitious Research Associate to contribute to the development of novel informatic tools to enhance genomics research and data analysis. The post holder will work with Dr. Samson Pandam Salifu at Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Faculty of Biosciences, College of Science, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in collaboration with other group projects including WASLIBRe, H3ABioNet and H3Africa.

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • MSc./MPhil in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or Public health/Biosciences with strong data analysis skills gained in other fields
  • Experience in programming/data analysis/development
  • Skills in at least one of: R, Python, Perl, Java, C/C++ in a Unix/Linux environment and the ability to learn new programming skills as required
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis of relevance to biological research and large datasets
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but also operating as part of a team, providing direction and guidance as required
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to work out with regular hours if required

Desirable

  • Experience and confidence in presenting research findings at national and international meetings
  • Familiarity with molecular biology concepts and principles
  • Major contribution to at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal

General Conditions of Award:

  1. This post is Full Time for one year appointment in the first instance, with the possibility to extend for up to 3 years depending on funding availability and the Researcher’s performance
  2. Remuneration is very attractive depending on qualification and experience
  • The position is available with immediate effect

The AREF Excell Researcher & Leadership Development Programme

The Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) at the KNUST is applying to participate in the Africa Research Excellence Fund’s Excell programme for researcher and leadership development. This notice invites applications from high-achieving health researchers to be considered by this institution for nomination to the Excell Programme.

AREF is a charity working to strengthen health research capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa.  It currently focuses on enhancing the research and leadership capabilities of outstanding postdoctoral scientists working on important health challenges for the sub region.

AREF’s Excell programme will enable 20 individual researchers from participating institutions to build strong research careers, empower excellent teams, win research funds, work collaboratively, engage with research users – and so make an even bigger impact on improving health and saving lives.

Essential eligibility criteria for individual nomination by the institution to AREF

  • An employee of KCCR or KNUST with a significant and specific research role
  • A national of a Sub-Saharan African state
  • 2-6 full years of active post-PhD research experience; or a clinician without a PhD with both an MD and a research Masters and 4-7 years of active research experience.
  • Not already having participated in equivalent programme(s).
  • AREF is keen to recruit talented researchers from a broad range of disciplines, including laboratory, clinical, behavioural, social, public health, health systems, and environmental and mathematical sciences. Their research must be directed towards achieving better health outcomes in Africa.
