After two years of construction, KCCR opened its new research Centre on KNUST campus officially on November 13 th 2003. The 855m2 main building with the administration and several modern laboratories includes 6 offices for visiting scientists, a conference room with a capacity of 60 seats and several store rooms. The laboratory includes facilities for Parasitology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Bacteriology, Virology, and Data Entry. A separate animal house, to keep insects and other invertebrates, can be made available. The Laboratories are equipped among others with microscopes, biosafety hoods, cooled centrifuges, thermal cyclers, agarose gel electrophoresis, transluminator, dark room, -80 ° C freezers, deep freezers and fridges. Liquid nitrogen is available. The Centre has internet access at the research and administration block as well as in the Guesthouse through the satellite system of KNUST. A fleet of 12 four wheel vehicles under the supervision of a maintenance unit are available for fieldwork. In addition are generators to back up power supply. The KCCR guesthouse comprises 8 apartments of 38 m 2 each with access to a kitchennette shared by two guests. Additional guesthouse for 5 persons are available at Agogo and Dunkwa. The Centre has a cafeteria which serves up to 40 persons and a seminar room to accommodate at least 60 participants. KCCR has built up a highly motivated and experienced team, that has gained experience through more than 20 research projects. The Centre has also established 3 research field stations in Agogo (Ashanti-Region), Dunkwa (Central Region) and Essiama (Western Region) with purpose-built laboratory facilities. Research ties in Ghana exist with Ghana Health Service including Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi , Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra and the Health Research Unit, Ministry of Health, Accra. |
